One game remained. The Gulag Guardians had just lost a heartbreaker near the end of their second-to-last game, and Sam had a few words for his own performance: “I need to be better.”
The next one had already been declared LG — Last Game. Saturday would get exactly one more ending.
The night had been demanding well before that moment. Sam described the competition as World Series of Warzone level. The Guardians called an audible: if the field was going to play that hard, they might as well play Ranked and compete for SR. The climb began from Diamond I.
ScruffyGamer joined Sam and Lovis before the broadcast was over. The lineup was complete. DSPN’s unofficial luxury-tax department was, naturally, reviewing the paperwork.
But a roster move and a change of battlefield could only set the stage. The Guardians still had to play their way through it.
The first turnaround
Lovis did not need anyone else to describe his rough stretch. By his own account, he was “getting cooked today.” For a while, Saturday had the makings of a kitchen story with an unfortunate ending.
The story turned when Lovis delivered a clutch performance that helped pull the Guardians away from defeat and toward a Dub. The admission made the play more compelling: he had named the trouble before he helped turn it around.
DSPN’s unofficial kitchen report, updated: Lovis felt the heat, then helped serve up a Dub. That was a memorable answer. It would not be the night’s last test.
One last game
The second-to-last game ended in heartbreak. Sam’s “I need to be better” was not a victory speech or an excuse. It was an honest line spoken with one game still left to play.
Then came the declared LG. Sam, Lovis, and Scruffy went in together. What followed was a clutch thriller, and this time the last game ended with the Guardians walking out with the Dub.
The final win did not erase the earlier loss. It made that loss part of the reason the ending mattered. Lovis had already supplied one turnaround. Sam had asked more of himself. Scruffy was there for the final push. The Guardians had to find one more answer as a team.
The DSPN final word
The jerseys eventually came off Saturday night. First, the Gulag Guardians left the Dapper Dome with one final reminder: being down is not the same as being done.
